Finland hosts IBSA Goalball World Championships 2014 from 26th June to 6th July in Espoo. The tournament is one of the biggest disability sport events ever held in Finland.
Goalball is a team sport played by male and female athletes with a visual impairment. Goalball is a Paralympic sport and the governing body of the sport is the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA). There will be 16 menís teams and 12 womenís teams participating in the World Championships.
Goalball World Championships is held every fourth year. Last
time in Sheffield 2010 Lithuania won menís tournament and China was
number one in womenís tournament. Finland wasnít among the
participants in menís tournament and finished fifth in womenís
tournament. Since then Finland menís team has won IBSA World Games,
European Championships and Paralympic Games. Womenís team is also
one of the top teams in the world and finished fourth in London
Competition venues for the World Championships are Sport Hall Tapiola and Sport Hall Summa which are situated next to each other in Tapiola Sport Center area. Address for Sport Hall Tapiola is Urheilupuistontie 2, 02200 Espoo.
Ticket for the playoff matches
Thereís a free entrance to the Round Robin matches (30.6.Ė3.7.) of the World Championships. For the playoff matches (4.Ė5.7.) you need a ticket which costs 20 euros. That allows you to see all the matches played on Friday and Saturday. You can buy tickets from the Info tent located right next to the Sport Hall Tapiola.
Public transportation is the easiest way to get to the competition arena
There are excellent public transportation connections to the 2014 IBSA Goalball World Championships venues. Most convenient way to get to the Tapiola area from Helsinki is by bus. The lines 105, 107, 109 and 110 from Kamppi centrum in the middle of Helsinki take you near the competition venues.
